Nuclear power plants in war zones
In the course of the Russian war of aggression on Ukraine, one thing became clear to the world: nuclear power plants can also become the target of attacks in the course of a war, or at least be a theatre of combat operations.
A few weeks ago, the nuclear power plant in Zaporizhzhya was the scene of such hostilities. No serious damage was caused to the power plant. However, it is evident that nuclear power plants are not off limits and can become the target of attacks, either unintentionally or intentionally, in the event of war.
Last week, the ISR of BOKU organised an event on the topic of nuclear power plants in war zones – a risk assessment with speakers from the Institute itself, as well as experts from the BMK and the Austrian Armed Forces.
